Our missionaries are normal people from all walks of life who have dedicated their lives to serving and following Jesus wherever He calls them. Want to meet them? Check out our Missionary Directory.
In August of 2006, we moved to Nigeria as a family. Oh, what a first year we experienced! All of us had malaria, an armed home invasion by 5 men, both Bob and Meredith were involved in serious car accidents, and other challenges too numerous to mention; yet the opportunities to share His Word and spread the Gospel far outweighed all these troubles. The years have rolled by and new challenges have come such as Boko Haram bombing several places around the city of Jos; the most concerning was a church that was only a few miles from where we lived. However in just this past year—our 10th year of serving in Nigeria—we were in 15 different villages sharing the Gospel with over 9,000 individuals and seeing over 1,000 of them make decisions for Christ. We were involved in 5 Christian camps and a VBS ministering to over 1,000 youth and having 107 of them trust Christ. We provided leadership training for dozens of local churches to minister to children and youth. We maintain administration rolls in some Bible Clubs in orphanages and a National Missionary children’s school. Keep in mind Bob and Meredith are no different than YOU. After all “we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” That’s all we are doing: taking one more step in the works that He has prepared for us to do. Are you ready to take one more step in His plan for your life?
Bob was saved at a young age growing up in Central New York, but didn’t grow spiritually until after he began dating Meredith. Meredith had grown up in Connecticut and wound up in Vermont where God brought the two of them together after she recently had been saved. They attended an evangelical church together and married in 1988. Their youth had been like many in the 70’s & 80’s; and far from what was honoring to God. As they grew in their faith and relationship with God they served as youth group leaders, and nursery/Sunday school teachers as their own children came along. Ryan was born in 1991 & Sarah in 1995. Bob was a sawmill foreman for True Temper hardware and Meredith hung wallpaper and painted in Rutland Vt. All in all they were a very typical American family, pursing the American dream. Maybe the one exception to being typical was the dog sled team that Bob & Meredith had. But because of the dog sled team they got involved with Word of Life, offering rides to guests at the Word of Life Inn for several years.
Things began to change when a team of young people from WOL came to Church and challenged the members to make a covenant with God to read His Word on a daily basis for 15-20 minutes. After all if you watch 2 hours of TV a day, you spend that much time watching commercials and God’s word is definitely more profitable than TV commercials. God used His Word to begin the calling of Bob into ministry. But, for over a year Bob wrestled with God about it. After all, there was a family involved, a mortgage, car payments, credit cards, a career; and full time ministry would mean education. None of it caught God by surprise: from selling a home in 2 weeks, becoming a family that was all in school, housing, medical and financial needs all culminating in both Bob & Meredith receiving Bachelors of Religious Education degrees and finishing debt free, His hand was evident throughout.
Although Bob & Meredith were committed to serving God in whatever capacity He called them to, it was through much prayer and a survey trip to Nigerian in 2002 He confirmed they would become missionaries in Nigeria. The thoughts of raising the needed support, moving to a foreign country and living in a very different culture were overwhelming and frightening at times, but through it all God was faithful and His Word encouraged every step of the way. We were encouraged by Proverbs 19:21—“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.”
Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
