Stephen Makau and Olivia Mutisya
About Stephen Makau
My name is Stephen Makau Mutisya, married to Olivia and we have two children, Naemi who will be turning four next year January and Samuel who will be turning two this November. My Mum got saved when I was still young and because of that she used to send us to church, most of the time Dad was gone to work and the only parent who was there for us was Mum. I still remember listening to her praying for dad and us by names that we would get saved. Today her prayer is answered, everyone in my family is saved.
Growing up in the ghetto was a big challenge for me and my friends, we didn’t have role models, many of our elder brothers and sisters joined bad groups and ended up being thugs, the girls often ended up sluts, I remember when I was 12 I had already planned my life to be a bank robber and I knew that at the age of 22 I would be rich, married and owned my house, I did most of the things that the other children did, we would steal our parents money to go and gamble. After my primary school I performed well and was called to a provincial school but my parents couldn’t afford it so I ended up in one of the local schools.
After three years I dropped out because my dad lost his job, I was discouraged and I remember asking God if He cared about my life, at this time I was not saved and I found it hard to trust God with my life, to me life was useless, it was around this time when some of my friends went for a Word of Life camp and come back saved. I liked the way they lived and especially when they would recite verses, to me this was special, What or Who had changed them was the question that I would often ask myself, as we spend time together they started witnessing to me but I found it hard to give my life to Christ because of the disappointment that I had (not finishing school), they never gave up on me, one of them invited me to join them for a Sunday service but I turned him down a couple of times, one Sunday after he noticed that I had lied to him a couple of times, he came to our home and asked my mum if I would join him for church, she agreed and again at 17 yrs old I was forced to go to church, on that day the pastor preached on WHY CHRIST HAD TO DIE. The message got home and made me think, how my sins had made God, sent His Son. I realized that the only way to have a relationship with God was through accepting Christ in my life and I asked Christ to forgive my sins and to come into my life. I have seen God work in me, the things that I used to struggle with are now bygone things, the anger, and hatred. This does not mean that I am perfect. No,every day there is a new challenge that comes my way but I have learned that these challenges are there for me to trust God more and always depend on Him because without Him I cannot overcome them, after I gave my life to Christ I got an opportunity through my friends brother (George) to go a Word of Life Teens Camp, during that camp I realized that I was wrong about God and that everything that happened to me was not new to Him. Through the camps at the word of life, I got to learn a lot and also grew in my faith.
George discipled us through the year, he would come back every Sunday to the ghetto and spend his time taking us through God’s word and answering the questions that we battled with. Thereafter I got the chance to join the word of life short term bible school(STBS)( now DTC). While in Bible School I made a prayer that I wanted to serve the Lord all of my life, reaching out to the young people in Ken with the word of God. God answered my prayer and wol Kenya asked me to join the team as a volunteer. Today we are full-time Missionaries with WOL Kenya, serving the Lord in the coastal region of our country. Our family verse is 2 Tim 2:2, And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
2 Timothy 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also
