Ministry Description
Begun in 1994, the ministry of Word of Life in Dominican Republic today is led by Marcelo Diez. Word of Life Dominican Republic is a youth-focused ministry working with the local church to reach each generation with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Word of Life has partnered with over 100 churches and 400 servant leaders in the DR doing Bible Clubs for youth and young adults. Word of Life Dominican Republic purchased a 15-acre beachfront property in 2016. The property had 42 buildings, converted into camper cabins, hotel rooms, staff housing, and family units. The camp property has continued to develop and now has a swimming pool, multiple sports courts, and an auditorium and dining hall fit to host up to 600 guests. Word of Life Dominican Republic has since purchased the land beside the current property and has begun construction for another swimming pool, auditorium, dining hall, and 6 new camper cabins. The camp property is used year-round in many ways, including the Discipleship Training Center, a 1- or 2-year Bible school for high school graduates. The goal is to train young men and women in Biblical studies and ministry and send them out to churches in the Dominican Republic. The school currently has about 50 students enrolled, and these students return home on the weekend to minister with Bible Clubs in their churches. Every year Word of Life has a children's camp in the spring, 4 weeks of teens camp in the summer, and a weekend for young adults. Everyone is involved in spring and summer camp, the missionaries, the students, and the volunteers. Many young people come to know Christ every year! With so much to do we need your help! Volunteers can help us in many ways at the camp property. Help is needed to complete the work: landscaping, sidewalks, project construction, electrical, plumbing, painting and there is work for everyone. The Dominican Republic shares an island with the country of Haiti and is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Nearly 80 percent of the country's 49,000 sq. km is covered with mountains, but some 20 distinct topographical areas exist in Dominican Republic. About half of the nearly eight million residents live in rural areas and more than two-thirds of the island's people live in substandard conditions. Roman Catholicism is the country's official religion and about 90 percent profess this. About half of the population are believed to be involved in occult practices. Only five percent claim to be Christian.
